AKUMAA MAMA Zimbi, otherwise known as Joyce Dongotey-Padi, the CEO of Widows Alliance Network (WANE) and a presenter on Adom FM, is gradually encrypting her name into the history books as one of Ghana's radio personalities who has gained international recognition for her hard work.
BEATWAVES reported earlier that the two-time Arts Critics and Reviewers Association of Ghana (ACRAG) Award winner has been short-listed to receive a Wise Award. Information available indicates that the one-time actress, out of 15 other nominees, has been selected to pick the award.
This is as a result of establishing a network to emancipate and empower widows through employment skills, human rights education, reproductive health and social integration programmes.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Doha, Qatar, on November 17. It will be part of a two-day global forum on education dubbed Wise Forum, from November 16th to the18th.
WISE (World Innovation Summit for Education) is a global groundbreaking, collaborative initiative established by the Qatar Foundation under the high patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned.
It seeks to monitor and contribute to 21st century challenges and their impact on education.
With 1,000 major education stakeholders, opinion leaders and decision-makers from diverse disciplines in over 120 countries participating, WISE endeavours to propose visionary thinking on education, offer new ways of addressing current global challenges and untapped opportunities, and anticipate future education models.
The award ceremony, which will be one of the major agenda during the WISE forum, is aimed at recognizing and celebrating projects and initiatives that have demonstrated a real and positive impact.
It is also to provide an opportunity for individuals who have been excelling in educating their communities to raise their profiles and promote their success in the global educational community.
Awards will thus be given based on pluralism, sustainability and innovation within educational projects. This year's award attracted more than 395 entries.
Applications were drawn from all over the world; 110 applicants from Africa, 92 from Asia & Oceania, 80 from Europe, 35 from the Middle East, 56 from North America and 25 from South and Latin America. Akumaa was the only Ghanaian short-listed for the sustainability category.
